Alright, so the title may be a little cheesy. And potentially confusing. But essentially I’m giving up my Tuesday night to create your guide to fully enjoying the last month left of summer ’14.
If you’re anything like me, you might be thinking summer lasted about ten, maybe fifteen minutes – did July even happen? – leaving with you with just a few precious weeks to savor Sundays laying out in Central Park and strolling around in Manhattan sans coat/jacket/full-blown, Antarctic-level parka. So before the cold fronts start rolling in, let’s knock out a few of these summer to-dos off our collective bucket-list, shall we?
Summer Forever: August 2014 Bucket List
- Head out to a ball game (and take me with you). If they don’t win, it’s a shame. But the over-priced beers and rooting on your team with your friends is what summer is all about.
- Watch an outdoor movie. Try the HBO Bryant Park Film Festival for free on Monday nights. Hello, date night.
- Wander outside of the city. From Montauk to Fire Island, as long as there is a way to get there, you should go explore. Take your roommates. Enjoy the beach. Ride bikes to the bars. You never know what you’ll find.
- Stop by Popbar in the West Village. Everyone needs a sweet, cool treat to beat the heat, and granted I’ve tried almost all of them, but this is the real deal. Gelato on a stick. Need I say more? The Pistachio dipped in chocolate just happens to be my favorite.
- Check out Summer Streets, when seven miles of road from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park are closed off on Saturday mornings exclusively in August. There are free bike rentals, rock-climbing, a zip-ling and more!
- Pack a picnic for Governors Island via a free ferry. The views of New York Harbor from the comfort of your very own hammock are breathtaking.
- Sip a cocktail on one of the amazing rooftop bars or riverside watering holes. I’ve always had a soft spot for the Frying Pan, but I’m just now discovering my love for Boat Basin Café on the Upper West Side. How incredible is this view?
- Take the A train all the way up to190th Street to visit The Cloisters, a branch of The Metropolitan Museum of Art that is straight out of a medieval fairy tale with it’s architecture and rare collection of European art. If it was this beautiful during the winter, I can only imagine how spectacular it is during the summer.
- Tap into your inner yogi by going to a Bryant Park yoga class for free with hundreds of your closest friends. Get there early though – the lawn fills up fast.
- Bike or walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and end up at the legendary Grimaldi’s for New York City’s best pizza.
- Cheer on your favorite players at the US Open. Every year, 700,000 people come to watch legends like Roger Federer and Serena Williams battle it out on the tennis court. See you there.
- Actually take the time to explore Central Park. There’s more than Sheep Meadow, I promise.
- Embrace ‘shorteralls.’
- Escape from the traffic and skyscrapers of Manhattan by touring the New York Botanical Gardens in the Bronx.
- Become a tourist for the day and take the [free] Staten Island Ferry around New York. Refreshing breezes and gorgeous views of the city included.
- Grab some friends and walk the High Line, a mile long park built on an elevated section of the former New York Central Railroad spur called the West Side Line.
- Chill out and listen to the New York Philharmonic. For almost fifty years they have been performing free concerts for New Yorkers in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island and Queens. It’s basically tradition.
- On that note, go to concerts. And more concerts. Rockwood Music Hall and Pianos are great go-tos for live, free music.
- Test out your sea legs (and arms) with the free kayaks from Downtown Boathouse.
