Just in time for wedding season, I stumbled across an article featuring Vow to Be Chic’s CEO and Founder, Kelsey Doorey. Her website, which offers designer bridesmaid dresses and ‘little white dresses’ rentals, is not only economical, but more efficient, too. Men have been renting tuxes for years – why not extend the same courtesy to women? Lucky for all brides (and bridesmaids) out there, Kelsey Doorey asked the same thing – and decided to do something about it.
1. How were you inspired to start Vow to Be Chic?
I’ve been a bridesmaid six times, and while it’s an amazing honor, after a while it adds up to be an expensive honor. I just knew that there had to be a better way.
2. When did you have that ‘aha’ moment and decide to take your idea and turn it into a business?
I went tux shopping with a guy friend and realized, “Men have been renting tuxes forever. Why can’t women have the same option?” That’s when I realized that rentals are the solution to the dreaded bridesmaid dress issue.
3. How do you start your day as the CEO and Founder of your own company?
I check my email and social media while laying in bed trying to wake up, and then I take my puppy for a walk on the beach in Santa Monica. I’m from the east coast so seeing the beach and palm trees still makes me smile every day.
4. What’s the best part about your job?
The best part of my job has to be working with an amazing team and doing something that I’m passionate about. It’s amazing how doing something you love can positively impact your day, and your entire life. You no longer dread going to work but instead are excited to push the business further and see what you can make happen each day. Doing that with an amazing group of talented and passionate people is the best.
5. Coffee or tea?
Neither. I’ve never drank a cup of coffee in my life (an odd fact, I know). Usually I just drink water or fruit juice and if I need some sort of energy boost, candy is always my go-to.
6. Do you have a funny/interesting bridal story from a past client?
Once a bride called me at 6am in a panic. Her maid of honor had lost both of her bags at the airport. Her checked bag was lost by the airline, and she forgot the other at the security checkpoint.
“I’m getting married in less than 24 hours and my maid of honor doesn’t have anything to wear! Can you help?” she pleaded over the phone. So I rushed into office and overnighted a dress to her (since we have dresses on hand). I’m just happy that Vow is in a position to be able to help in emergency situations like that.
7. If you could do anything else, what would it be?
I joke that I’m an accidental entrepreneur. I had a job lined up after business school, but then then opportunity to start Vow To Be Chic arose. At this point, I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.
8. How many times have you been a bridesmaid?
Six and counting (most of my closest friends haven’t been married yet so there will be more to come).
9. Favorite bridal colors and why?
Ohh that changes often but right now, I’m loving navy bridesmaid dresses and pairing them with midnight blue tuxes on the men. It’s such a sophisticated, modern look and the bride really stands out in her white dress.
10. What is your ideal honeymoon spot(s)?
That’s easy – an overwater bungalow in Tahiti or Bora Bora. A photo of the Hilton Bora Bora is always on my phone at all times.
Keep up with Vow To Be Chic:
