I originally met Amanda and Kelsey at my friend Yasmin’s pumpkin-carving party this past fall. While the subject of conversation should have been centered on carving ideas and Halloween plans, I couldn’t stop myself from asking the two best friends more about their event planning company, Eventurously. Both were extremely enthusiastic about building the company from the floor up, utilizing their wide skillset and innate talents that had caught the eyes of previous employers, like Facebook and Twitter. Naturally, when I started this series, I knew I had to find out how their experience of growing a successful company began, especially when it involved working with a best friend 24/7.
How did you two meet?
We met back in 1999 in our hometown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, when our mutual friend decided to bail on our 7th grade sleepover. The two of us awkwardly talked about our favorite Britney Spears song and which N*Sync member was the cutest until we fell asleep. The following morning we were already planning our next sleepover, and knew we would be best friends for life. 16 years later, here we are in NYC growing our own brand (and obviously still having sleepovers).
How did you both come to live and work in New York?
Kelsey came to NYC in 2010 with no plans except to see where this city would lead her. After one year without her other half (who was still living in Wisconsin), she convinced Amanda to buy a one-way ticket to the Big Apple, and as a team we decided we would navigate this city together.
What inspired you both to start Eventurously?
After a handful of apartments, one epic run-in with John McCain & BFF Rudy Guilliani, and a few jobs at name-brand companies (#humblebrag), we realized we wanted to build something that we could call our own. We wanted to challenge each other and learn more each day instead of staying in our comfort zone. It was either now or never to take a leap of faith and branch out on our own as event planners.
What are the pros and cons working with your best friend?
Pros – We’re like sisters. We’ve been through so much together over the past 16 years and this bond has allowed us to take on any situation or challenge that presents itself. We work so well as a team because we balance each other out and every day we feed off of each other’s energy.
Cons – There aren’t any we can think of! Cheesy, we know…
How do each of you start your day as the CEOs and Founders of your own company?
We wake up and immediately decide what to eat for breakfast. After our brains and bodies are fueled, we then begin our day filled with meetings, site-visits, walk-throughs, phone calls, in-person meetings – whatever we have scheduled! We try to find at least 1 hour of every day to take a mental break and work up a sweat at the gym.
Where do you find your best ideas for planning events?
We love finding inspiration in our every day experiences. We also love attending events around the city to take notes (see what works well, what doesn’t work, what we would do differently, etc). Bizbash is also a great way to find inspiration – they’re always highlighting current tech trends and event ideas/themes.
What’s the best part about your job?
Creating new experiences for clients. Our goal is to transform each event into a unique experience for people to share with their friends, and remember for years to come.
Coffee or tea?
After weaning Amanda off of her severe coffee addiction, we’re now avid black tea drinkers. Our favorite drink? Tea Misto. Check it out!
What do you both read every day? (papers/blogs, etc.)
If each of you could open another business together – just for fun – what would it be?
We’ve always talked about how great it would be to own our own event space. It would save a lot of money for not only Eventurously, but our clients. Owning real estate is too scary for us though! Maybe one day….
