College football season has officially begun, but that doesn’t give you an excuse to give up your style as you cheer on your alma mater. And no, I do not mean in favor of dressing up in jerseys, T-shirts or “jorts.” It’s simply Southern tradition to dress-up on Gamedays, a notion that no matter where I’m at, I’ll always have in me and hope to pass on.
Being an Gator girl, I’ve always had to work with non-traditional colors (plus a little thing called humidity) to show my school spirit, but with a little mixing and matching of patterns and materials (with additional hours of online merchandise stalking), I’ve discovered that even the most problematic football game fashion faux pas can be tackled with time.
Although I’ve displayed the classic style route above, there are a ton of options to update your Gameday look to set you apart from the crowd.
The Dress: I’m obsessed with designers like Judith March, Emma Graham Designs and Southern Frock who constantly reinvent dress options to set you apart from the pack with great colors, fabrics and patterns. You’ll see in the image above that the dress is actually a Judith March creation and one of my absolute favorites for Gameday.
Note: Without fail, I always see at least three girls sporting the same Lilly Pulitzer dress at a tailgate. While the LP is great for some occasions, you may want to shy away from this overdone Gameday cliché.
The shoes: Jack Rogers sandals will always be the original Gameday footwear for me. Especially early in the season. With so many colors, how could you resist? If you wear flip-flops to Gameday, or for that matter anywhere besides a beach, you’re doing something wrong. If you’re really daring (or cheering a Southern team) cowboys are perfectly acceptable. Maybe this year you’ll even try ankle boots?
The Accessories: Bangles and necklaces from Swell Caroline (see above: monogrammed necklaces anyone?), J.Crew and Kate Spade New York always add the finishing touches to any outfit, and Gameday is no exception. Add in painted pearls from the Gameday Girls (it wouldn’t be Gameday without some form of pearls) and a spirited embroidered button from Tailgate Creations (see below: currently craving the chevron pattern below!) and you’ve got just enough to play around with combination-wise with in order to make sure your ensemble does not have a twin.
As far as handbags? Crossbody handbags and small, charming backpacks (yes, charming – you don’t want to show up like you came straight from a library do you? Think Longchamp, not Vera Bradley) allow your hands to be free for cheers and then later to signal for another round. After all, Saturdays in the fall are for celebration, right? Just don’t forget your koozie.
Happy Gameday, y’all!
