This city never ceases to surprise me.
Just yesterday, my roommate Julianna and I, went on an adventure in the West Village. It was beautiful out, and due to Julianna’s history with the area (she had lived there the previous summer), I had my own personal tour guide. This girl is a fountain of knowledge when it comes to Sex and the City shooting locations. And the best place for gelato – which is Cones, by the way. I have no idea how they’ve made corn the most popular flavor there, but it is incredible. The regulars (which will now include me) swear by it.
As the afternoon wore on, we decided to stop at A.O.C. for lunch in the backyard garden. I had been introduced to their French cuisine through an old boss and knew that their backyard garden (complete with a side of their crispy fries) would be the ideal spot.
A little into re-reading the menu – everything there is good. Everything – two guys on their way to Ireland were seated next to us. Somehow we ended up talking, and at one point our tables might have been joined. They ended up finishing their meals first and said their goodbyes, both of our tables wishing each other luck on our journeys. A moment later the waiter appeared and surprised us with the news that our check had been paid for by the gentlemen. J and I could not believe it. We literally were speechless. As was the waiter, who wanted to know what we had said. Day made.
Leaving the restaurant on our way to SoHo, we were still shocked by the last minutes of our time at A.O.C. We both agreed to pay it forward one day and surprise another table with authentic kindness.
So if you’re in New York, keep an eye out. You never know what a friendly conversation with strangers could lead to.
